Starting pay for coast census takers highest in MS

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Hundreds of census takers that will be hired along the Gulf Coast stand to make more money than those in other parts of the state. On Tuesday, a new census headquarters will open in Gulfport on Seaway Road.

Reverend Lee Adams is the local census office manager. Reverend Adams said all the information collected by census takers in Harrison, Hancock, Jackson, Pearl River, Stone and George counties will be processed in that office. He told WLOX he expects the federal government to hire 1,000 people for our area.

According to the government website, the starting pay for census takers at the Southhaven, Meridian and Tupelo offices is $10.50 an hour. However, census takers on the coast start out at $14.50 an hour.

Reverend Adams said anyone who wants to apply for a job with the must call 1-866-861-2010.

It's a national initiative to prevent bullying and improve student engagement. Fifth and sixth graders at Biloxi Upper Elementary are focusing on being helpful and nice to one another. Faculty members held a program to get students to participate.
