Heart to heart connection between business and non-profit

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - For Jacki D'Alexander, there's a greater purpose driving her new business.

"My dad had passed away about a year and half ago from heart disease, and he'd been suffering for about seven years with heart problems. I decided I wanted to pay tribute to him," D'Alexander said.

That's when the real estate company Heart Properties was born, along with a new partnership with the American Heart Association.

"First of all, we were real excited that she'd want to do that," said Becky Ginn with the American Heart Association. "When people come in, not only do they get to see a great house, they will also get information from us on heart disease."

Ginn said the American Heart Association is lucky to have a lot of support from the community, and they're always looking to partner with new businesses in south Mississippi.

"We've not had as much luck with the newer companies coming on board. So Jacki taking this step of faith with us makes us realize we're going to be in front of more new companies and, hopefully, they'll be willing to take that journey with us," Ginn said.

And Heart Properties will get marketing exposure through events like the association's Go Red campaign each February.

D'Alexander just handed over her first donation to the association, and she's working to provide ongoing financial support through home sales.

"It helps motivate me more and helps me to get out and be a little more energetic and do more business, because I know the more money I make, the more I'll be able to contribute to them," D'Alexander said.
