Murder on Halsel Street in Gulfport

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - On a street lined with Christmas decorations, holiday cheer turned to fear in the space of a few moments late Monday night. Halsel Street in Gulfport became a murder scene.

David Shivers, Jr., 29, died of a gunshot wound to the head inside his home. Investigators said the fatal shot was fired from outside. Shivers died on the kitchen floor, while other family members in the home called police.

Right now, police have little to go on considering the strange nature of the crime.

"Obviously when you say enemies you're speaking about motive, and that's something we're trying to determine," Deputy Chief Leonard Papania said. "What would have motivated someone to do this act? That we're in hopes of finding out to bring closure to that family."

Neighbors were stunned by the news, but admit there have been problems in the neighborhood.

"Lately here we do have some burglaries, nothing major, and the police were here," Angelus Capers said. "I have confidence in the police force that everything works out. But nothing to this extent, so it's very shocking right now to hear that."

Another neighbor, Barbara Taylor, has a very different outlook.

"I definitely have a fear for my own safety in this neighborhood," Taylor said. "I lived in Ohio in big cities and I've never had violence this close to me, the violence across the street is very close to me and I'm very concerned."

Taylor is even thinking about putting her house up for sale.

"I am seriously considering moving out of Mississippi, because I am a veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is really going to cause me some problems," Taylor said.

Meanwhile, police are continuing to search for clues in the effort to find the killer.
