BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Members of the coast Slavic community are turning to a long time tradition to help one of their own.
On Saturday, the Slavic Benevolent Association's Ladies Auxiliary cooked and sold tasty pusharatas. Every year around Christmas, the ladies get together using a Yugoslavian recipe that has been passed down through the generations.
The money raised this weekend will go to help a fellow member, Jerry Kay Baronich, with hospital expenses. The ladies say the hard work of making pusharatas is made a little easier knowing they're helping a friend who is ill.
"Oh, it's special. She's a special person," said Pat Smolcich. "There's nobody in the world like her. She's like a daughter to me. Very close. Normally we make these to pay for our trip every year, but we decided to do this today to help our friend."
"She is close to my heart," Lee Adamson said. "Because from my experience as a survivor of cancer, I know what she's going through. My heart goes out to her."
The Slavic community will be cooking and selling pusharatas again on December 23rd. They say this time as a benefit for the lodge. The ladies say people wanting some of the scrumptious treats must pre-order by December 15th. To place your order, call Pat Smolcich at (228) 392-5226.
