Military wives send holiday cheer overseas

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Susan Collier and her 7-year-old daughter Samantha Hanson are putting a few extra items in their grocery cart. Their shopping list got a little longer after running into some military wives outside the D'Iberville Walmart.

The wives set up shop outside the D'Iberville Walmart collecting everything from board games and DVDs, to food and personal hygiene items for the troops.  Their husbands are National Guard soldiers with Alpha Company A, 155th deployed to Balad, Iraq.  They say the outpouring of community support warmed their hearts on a rather chilly night.

"We had an elementary teacher that brought by several envelopes full of cards that the children had made just for this," Nicole Duplichien said.

Inside Walmart, Samantha was busy stocking up on goodies to send overseas.

"Well, I got two popcorns, two peanuts, two [packages of] cups and fruit trail mix," Samantha said.

It's the generosity from the community and, in some cases, complete strangers that always touched Loree Gillman, who stopped by to donate.  After serving with the Navy in Iraq, Gilman knows how hard it is to be away from home and family when the holidays roll around.

"I know what they're going through over there. I appreciate what they're doing for me cause I did it myself," Gilman said.

After about an hour, Susan and Samantha came back to unload.  By adding some extra items to their grocery list, Susan and Samantha will make this Christmas a much merrier one for soldiers overseas.
