County officials have been working for about eight years to find a suitable industry to bring to the abandoned International Paper mill site. They think they have found the industry in Mississippi Gasification. The company wants to build a natural gas producing plant that converts a petroleum bi-product.
For the next several months the federal government is going to collect comments from area residents and combine that with additional studies into an environmental impact statement. Now is the time for you to have input. Maybe you have concerns about how the petroleum coke will be barged into the proposed facility or about the process that will be used in converting the coal like material into natural gas. On the other hand you might want to comment about the jobs and the taxes that would result from the plant being built in Moss Point.
While we favor economic development especially on land that has already been developed, we also want to make sure we balance our environment with the jobs that would be created. So far it seems like this plant would be a good fit for Jackson County. However, we encourage each of you to stay engaged during the permitting process and make sure you understand what is happening in your community.
That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to firstname.lastname@example.org, or post your comments below.
