(Hattiesburg-AP) -- Charles Gaines had 16 points and 11 rebounds and David Haywood hit three three-pointers in a second-half run as Southern Mississippi beat South Florida 70-to-62 today. The score was tied at 44 when Southern Mississippi used the run to take a 57-47 lead with about five minutes remaining. Jasper Johnson had 16 points and Greg Johnson added 13 for the Golden Eagles (12-14, 5-10 Conference USA). South Florida (13-12, 6-8) battled back to cut the lead to three points, 65-62, on Reggie Kohn's three-pointer with seven seconds left. That was as close as the Bulls would get. Kohn finished with 21 points and Will McDonald added 19. Jimmy Baxter had 10 points for South Florida. Haywood's only points came during the decisive run. Southern Miss fought back from a nine-point deficit to take a one-point lead, 30-to-29, at the break. Jasper Johnson had 13 of his 16 points in the first half. Southern Miss shot 50 percent in the second half.
