Pass Christian schools are a shining star

The whole nation now knows what the folks in Pass Christian have known for a long time. They have one of the best school districts in the country. For the first time, Mississippi school districts were compared with districts around the country. Pass Christian's school district earned the highest honor, a star rating.

The only other district in Mississippi to do this was Boonville. Pass Christian School officials attribute the success to administrators, teachers, parents and students all working as a team.

Bay St. Louis, Biloxi, Long Beach and Ocean Springs school districts received a high performing mark. Their students tested above the national average.

The only local school district to be listed at risk of failing was Moss Point. And Kreole Elementary is the only south Mississippi school that received a failing grade. Moss Point School Officials say they understand they have work to do, but say they have a base on which to build upon.

Overall many of our schools achieved above the national average. And several individually achieved a star rating, even though their school districts didn't. Now is the time for educators to reassess how courses are being taught so they will be even stronger next year. And as for the Pass Christian School District, congratulations, we should all strive to be as good as your district.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
