Gulfport City Council members are looking into buying a little over six acres of land off of Highway 49.
After an executive session, the council told the city attorney to begin negotiations on the land where the old Food World building now stands.
The city is considering moving its police department, courts, and other city offices to a new location.
"If we do decide to do this, if we're allowed to, if we can, moving the police department, the court, and some other city departments up there other than those departments having more space which they desperately need , hopefully it will encourage some development along that Highway 49 corridor area which is needed and that of course will increase tax revenues," said Councilman Richard Rose.
The city of Gulfport should decide in a few weeks if it will buy the land.
