Moss Point high school's NJROTC cadets top state list

MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) – Moss Point High's Naval Junior ROTC program has been chosen as top one in the state. The prestigious honor is given every year to a unit that exemplifies academic excellence, discipline and citizenship.

More than 150 Moss Point high students make up the Top NJROTC Unit in the state.  The program, which promotes the three Navy values; honor, courage, and commitment are what has helped the unit achieve the highest ranking.  The students beat more than ten other units for the number one title.

Cadet Sierra Randle said she knows why her team is number one.

"For academic achievement, academic excellent, and my unit has made some progress," Randle said.

Randle said she picked up her grades and changed her attitude about life since joining the program.

"My discipline attitude has gotten way better, and I learned how to work well with others."

Clayton Marshall said he has learned the value of sacrifice and service.

"I joined to better myself, and I want precede a future in the military," Marshall said.

Commander John Slay said he is proud of each one of his cadets for being the best of the best. Slay said his job is not to just motivate the students for military service, but he also focuses on making them into stronger and smarter leaders for the future.

"This program helps them see that they can become something bigger than themselves and be successful," Commander Slay said.

The cadets said the honor will push them to continue striving for excellence, one step at a time.
