This Veterans Day we are saddened as the nation prepares to bury 13 servicemen and women who gave their lives not on the field of combat, but at a Texas Army Post. Shot down in cold blood as they prepared to deploy to a war zone to protect you and me. This senseless killing emphasizes even more the sacrifice our servicemen and women make each day ensuring that we are able to live in a free nation.
As we sit in our comfortable homes or offices let us pause for a few moments and think of all the veterans who live among us and give them thanks. From World War II to the present conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan we have thousands of veterans in our midst who have devoted years of their lives to protect our country and our freedom.
Living here on the coast with so many military installations and retirees, Veterans Day needs not to be just one day a year to honor these men and women, but something we do each and every day. Well known war correspondent Elmer Davis summed it up quite well, by saying, "This nation will remain the land of the free, only so long as it is the home of the brave."
