Soria City festival unites community

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It's a festival full of fun, food and fellowship as they took center stage in an African dance. Students in the Soria City after school tutoring program performed in front of festival goers.

The kids, of course, did their fair share of bouncing around in the moonwalks and walking around during a cake walk as part of the festival fun. But, young people like Shaakirah James already appear to understand what the festival is really all about.

"To make sure we all are united together and understand the wisdom of older people," James said.

Organizers say the kids raised enough money to send the boxes, but say they still welcome donations to help the kids take on other community service projects. The after school program is located at the Willie Lock Community Center off 19th Street in Gulfport. You can reach them at (228) 313-0652.
