BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Hurricane Katrina wiped McElroy's Seafood Restaurant off the map at its longtime location at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor. It's been a four year long struggle for owner Mickey McElroy to rebuild the popular restaurant.
"I'm anxious, I'm excited, I'm ready to go," McElroy said as he walked along the harbor where his restaurant once stood.
Today a slab serves as a vivid reminder of Katrina's violent storm surge. McElroy has been dealing with insurance issues and battling the recession. Before the storm there was talk of developers building a condo tower or a hotel at the harbor with McElroy's restaurant being part of the project.
McElroy has given up on that idea and is now concentrating on rebuilding his restaurant.
"I'm focused on moving forward with the rebuilding. I've been sitting here paying my rent for four years with nothing happening and I need to get back in business," McElroy said.
Old customers have been coming up to Mickey McElroy and telling him how much they look forward to him reopening at the harbor.
"I hear it ten times a day. They ask, 'When are we going to see some progress?'"
McElroy said the new restaurant will have to comply with new FEMA guidelines.
"We'll be 25 feet above sea level."
Mickey McElroy hopes to break ground on the restaurant in the next few months.
