Chemical spill on Pineville Road

LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - The flashing lights of police cars kept drivers traveling with caution along Pineville Road Wednesday night. A little before 5pm, a tractor pulled onto Pineville Road and started leaking hydraulic fluid.

"He didn't become aware of it until he was a mile up the street, so it covered quite a bit of the roadway," said Lt. Brian Beeman with the Long Beach Police Department.

The spill created slippery roadways, and the timing couldn't have been worse for drivers.

"It's a busy area of the town and also it was right around 5:00 p.m.  We were able to get it blocked off fairly quickly so there was no accidents or anything like that," Beeman said.

Aside from slippery roads, officers say it was a non-flammable chemical that didn't pose any threat to the public.  Public Works crew got busy working on the roads shortly after the incident.

"They're spreading sand on the roadway and then they have a backhoe to smooth it out," Beeman said.

About two and half hours after the spill, clean-up crews were able to get the situation under control and get drivers back on a slippery-free roadway.

Full-time Waveland city workers, primarily police officers, who take-home vehicles outside of the city limits could see a change to the city's policy soon. City leaders said the current policy is antiquated and needs to be rewritten into something that would benefit both the officers and the taxpayers.
