Change helping tip the scales back in our favor

We were happy to report that the Centers For Disease Control recognized our state for making major strides in taking sodas and other unhealthy drinks out of its schools and offering more nutritious snack options.

Numerous times we have editorialized that our state needs to take action to make Mississippians healthy. We are still the most obese state in our country, but this change at the school level is moving us in the right direction. As a CDC spokesperson said, "the school environment is a key setting for influencing children's food choices and eating habits."

We applaud our state for taking action two years ago and putting strict rules in place on what can be sold out of school vending machines. It is a step toward ultimately making Mississippians healthier and tipping the scales back in our favor.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
