HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A Hancock County teen is charged with murder and more arrests could be on the way. It's a crime Sheriff Steve Garber said is drug related.
Jeremy Yarborough Rando, 18, was arrested Sunday. Two days earlier, Nicholas Patterson, 22, of Diamondhead was found dead in the back seat of a car along Third Marsh Road in the Clermont Harbor community.
The murder shocked everyone who knew Patterson, especially his parents, Leonard and Tamara Patterson.
"It was senseless what happened to him," the Pattersons said. "No one deserves that. Nobody in this world deserves that."
Sheriff Garber said before the shooting, Rando and Patterson had been together at Rando's home on Lee Road in Clermont Harbor.
"The cause of death, we said it was multiple gunshot wounds," Sheriff Garber said.
After the shooting, authorities said Rando drove Patterson's body to Third Marsh Road and left.
Like a growing number of crimes in Hancock County, the sheriff said this shooting is somehow connected to drugs.
"Between drugs and domestics, our community is changing," Garber said. "Here we're seeing a big increase in drug activity and domestic violence is running rampant. This has got to stop."
Nicholas Patterson's parents said he had never really been in trouble, and had to undergo drug testing for his job as a chef.
"Nick was just a good hearted, all around American boy," Tamara Patterson said. "We will miss him terribly. No one can know the pain that a mother goes through, but we have him in our hearts."
Rando is being held in the Pearl River County jail under a $1 million bond.
