HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Hancock County Sheriff investigators say a man found dead in the backseat of a car was murdered.
Saturday morning, an autopsy confirmed just that. 22-year-old Nicholas Clay Patterson who living in the Lakeshore area died from a gun shot wound. His body was found Friday on Third Marsh Road shortly after noon.
Investigators say since the discovery of Patterson's body, they've been busy interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
They say to solve a murder case, it is critical to gather as much information as they can in the first few hours and days.
Because of that legwork, investigators say they have some leads. While Patterson's body was found shortly after noon on Friday, police say he actually went missing the night before.
That's when his family became alarmed.
Hancock County Investigator Kenneth Hurt said, "The family and friends is the ones that found the body. They reported he left to go to the grocery store, to the store around 11, 11:30 Thursday night, and he didn't return. So, the friends were just out riding around looking for him and one of them found the car on Third Marsh Road."
Investigators say they are looking for several suspects at this time; however, they are not releasing any information on those suspects at this time.
WLOX will bring you more information as it becomes available.
