Be a backyard tourist

This week we all get to be tourists in our own backyards. Cruisin' the Coast once again has brought thousands of people and antique cars to South Mississippi. The week long event gives us all a chance to see the classic cars cruise up and down our highways.

The event has grown into one of the top tourism draws for the year, bringing tourists to our area several weeks after the summer season has ended. With the economy the way it is this year, no doubt Cruisin' will be a big boost to area hotels, restaurants and the casino industry.

Hundreds of area residents work months to coordinate and plan all the events that will take place this week. And the cruisers themselves have been faithful to us, even during our post Katrina recovery with damaged roads.

This year for the first time since Katrina the Cruisers once again have a rebuilt Highway 90 to drive along and enjoy our coastal views. We all should go out of our way to make sure the cruisers know that southern hospitality is alive and well on the Missisissipi Gulf Coast. We encourage you to get out this week and enjoy the cruisers and their classic cars.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
