D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Target has finally arrived here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Tuesday, at 5pm, there was an invitation only soft opening.
After the traditional ribbon cutting, the first customers walked into the store. Inside, they found 132,000 square feet of retail space. The store includes everything you could imagine, including groceries.
It's so big, in fact, they even give you a map when you walk in.
"The response has been phenomenal, we feel like rock stars when we walk through the streets of D'Iberville," Store Manager Dean Warren said.
Customers we spoke with used terms like "excited" and "happy" to describe their feelings. One lady from Biloxi told us she was tired of driving to Hattiesburg or Mobile to get the Target experience.
The fact that D'Iberville now has the coast's first Target, just adds to the city's impressive retail lineup, that will get better this weekend when much of the Promenade Shopping Center officially opens.
Target officials would not say exactly why they finally decided to come to the coast. But D'Iberville Mayor Rusty Quave said the key was forming a public private partnership with businesses at the Promenade.
Target's store manager would not say how many employees they have at the D'Iberville location. Target's corporate policy is to return five percent of its profits to the local community.
