GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - For the Gundy clan, a trip to the dentist has never been quite this fun.
"When we saw this was coming, this traveling exhibit, we were so excited. They love the dental chair, and they especially love this little horse where you can brush its teeth. Avery likes to brush its teeth very intensely," says Annie Gundy of Gulfport.
It's all part of a new traveling exhibit at the Lynn Meadow Discovery Center called Mouth Power. The American Dental Museum created the traveling exhibit which will be at the center through the end of December.
"Dental care is major issue in the state of Mississippi. We have children who miss school frequently because of dental issues," says Cynthia Minton, executive director for the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center.
Through a fun, hands-on approach, kids have a chance to learn about those issues through games like Tic-Tac-Tooth and displays showing what unhealthy habits can do to their teeth.
All the learning and fun was made possible, in part, by someone who isn't here to see kids take part in the fun, Jeff Alexander. The Jeff Alexander Foundation, which funded the exhibit, is named in honor of a local South Mississippi dentist.
"This is a wonderful tribute to his memory. The children are learning, but they're having fun. I hope maybe it will inspire a new generation of young people to become dental hygienists and dentists," says Dixie Alexander, Jeff's mom.
From their active participation in the exhibit, kids like Averie and Olivia are already getting a head start.
