BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Next month, about 10 thousand people in Mississippi will be hired to help collect information for the next census. Census forms will go out in March of 2010. The count happens every 10 years. The updated population numbers are important because they help reapportion the U.S. House of Representatives.
In 2000, Mississippi lost one of its representatives in Washington because of the census count. The census results are also used for the distribution of more than four hundred billion dollars a year of federal funds based on population formulas. That money goes to communities for things like schools and roads. That's why census officials say it is important to get a complete count of the communities so that each community gets the money from the federal government that it deserves.
