VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) - A South Mississippi family continues to grieve after the loss of a loved one.
Friends and family say 24-year-old Kevin Reed was no stranger to boating but after trying to take a shortcut, they say the thing he loved doing most, cost him his life.
"I can't believe it that my baby is gone," said Debbie Reed, the mother of Kevin Reed. "He was my beautiful baby boy. He was always into something."
She describes Kevin as energetic and full of life. It's a life his sister says ended too soon.
"I call on him for everything. He may have been my little brother but he took care of me," said Kevin's sister Kelly.
Sunday night the 24 year old was boating with friends when he tried to take a shortcut to the Tchoutacabouffa River. But the boat's fishing tower was too tall to clear a small causeway bridge.
"It was just a freak accident but anything can happen," said B.J. Rogers.
Rogers was on the boat the night of the accident.
"My top concern was my best friend in the whole world and I didn't find him and I know he's was relying on me to find him," said Rogers.
Even as friends and family continue to mourn the loss of a loved one, they can still smile about the man they say touched so many lives.
"He just enjoyed life to the fullest," said Reed.
Harrison Country coroner Gary Hargrove ruled Kevin Reed's death a drowning.
The family says there will be a memorial service this Thursday at Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home on Howard Avenue...in Biloxi.
The services will be from 9 until 11 a.m.
