Home Builders Finishing McDowell House

If you feel like you have a full house sometimes listen to the story of parents Nancy and Drew McDowell. The McDowells have 29 children living at home, ages 3 - 27. Over the years, the couple has adopted a total of 41 children, and they need a bigger home. The Mississippi Home Builders Association is helping make that dream come true and Saturday the family got another surprise from the association.

"Well, we actually began some 34 years ago, adopting children," mother Nancy McDowell said.

Saturday Nancy and her husband, Drew, played football and frisbee with their children out in the yard of their, soon-to-be, new home.

"There's been so many children that needed homes, and God just called us to do our work with children, and that's how we ended up with the 41," Nancy McDowell said.

The Coast's home builders association spring boarded this project close to two years ago and Saturday they presented the family with another gift.

"We are proud to award you this check, donation from our association," Mississippi Coast Home Builders Association president Clay Easterling said.

"It's an unbelievable feeling for them to come to us and ask to build them a home, what more could our association, the home builders association of the Mississippi coast to help a family is to provide a home for them," Home Builders Association member Woody Bailey said.

The McDowell children are extremely eager to move into the home, which means much more space, but, the house still needs work.

"We still need a great deal of help, both in the way of materials, labor, to finish the home. As you see the home here today, it looks almost complete, but there's sheet rock to be hung in the inside, carpeting, painting, wall covering appliances," Bailey said.

"Children are a gift from God and every child deserves a home and every child deserves a loving home, and that's what we've tried to do is make a difference in their life, and God's blessed us for it," McDowell said.

The McDowells hope they'll continue to receive community assistance so they can move into their house in the next few months.
