Promenade means more competition for retailers

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The much anticipated opening of the Promenade in D'Iberville is next month. For shoppers it means more options, but for retailers it is a very different story.

The Promenade represents competition for the retail dollar. But those we spoke with think that is a good thing.

"We welcome additional retail," Prime Outlets Mall's Pam Meinzinger said. "I think we will still be strong, people love brands, they don't want to pay full price."

Meinzinger points out that her outlet mall targets shoppers looking for something they will not find at the big box locations, like Promenade. One of those big box stores coming to the Promenade is Dick's Sporting Goods.

"I really don't think they will be that much competition," Eva Stockstill of Academy Sports said.

Her store will go head to head with Dick's Sporting Goods. Both stores offer much the same product and will be going after the same kind of customer.

"Everybody has heard Dick's is coming, but it is not affecting us in any way," Stockstill said.

Stockstill insists there will be no change in marketing strategy or anything else. She points out, their only strategy is to keep doing exactly what they have been doing.

Whether the retailers will benefit from the added competition remains to be seen, but the big winner will be the customer. More stores means more competition in the marketplace.

Full-time Waveland city workers, primarily police officers, who take-home vehicles outside of the city limits could see a change to the city's policy soon. City leaders said the current policy is antiquated and needs to be rewritten into something that would benefit both the officers and the taxpayers.
