It seems to us the new ordinance in Ocean Springs outlawing dogs on their side of the Biloxi Bay Bridge goes too far. Some walkers have enjoyed taking their dogs on the hike across the bridge. But now because of a few irresponsible pet owners who do not clean up after their animals, the majority of people will be denied the right to take their dogs on the walk.
And, what happens when a walker from Biloxi with their pet crosses the middle of the bridge and goes into Ocean Springs territory? Will they be ticketed for breaking the new ordinance? We think the leaders of Ocean Springs and Biloxi need to sit down and figure out a better solution to the problem.
Maybe an educational or awareness program for the persons causing the problem would change their ways. Also peer pressure might work in this case. If a walker sees an irresponsible pet owner not cleaning up the mess, they could ask them politely to take care of the problem.
If all this does not work, then we think instead of banning dogs, start fining those irresponsible pet owners. We suggest using reserve officers for the dog patrol, that would keep patrol officers on the road. In this day and time where we need each other more and more, we don't need to see a wall erected between Ocean Springs and Biloxi, especially over mans best friend.
