Diesel spill cleaned up on Bernard Bayou

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Coast Guard is investigating a minor diesel spill on Bernard Bayou in Gulfport.

According to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, the spill occurred Monday around 7am as a tug was transferring fuel from one tank to another.

A DEQ official said the accident happened at the dock of Gulf Ship on Glascock Drive. The company immediately started work on containing and cleaning up the spill.

"A malfunction or an operator error, which is what we're investigating right now," DEQ's Earl Etheridge said. "The fuel came out of the vent pipe off one of the tanks and put 25 gallons of diesel into Bernard Bayou. The company immediately stopped fuel transfer operations. They put a boom around the vessel and absorbent pads in the water."

The cleanup took about four hours. The DEQ said the spill did not hamper marine traffic, and there was no damage to the environment.

WLOX News tried to contact Gulf Ship for a comment, but no one from the company returned our phone call.
