GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Mississippi State Treasurer Tate Reeves is encouraging parents to start thinking about saving for college now. On Wednesday, he delivered his message to some Gulfport students.

Reeves told fifth graders at Anniston Elementary about the Mississippi Prepaid College Tuition Program.   Almost 30,000 families in Mississippi are enrolled in the plan.

Any child 18 and under is eligible and the funds cover tuition at any state college or university. You can also use the benefits for private or out-of-state schools.  Reeves said the plan is affordable, even during these tough economic times.

"As people are losing their jobs, it's harder for them to think about saving," Reeves said.   "What I would argue is that you really cannot afford not to start thinking about what's best for your child and how it makes sense.  And quite honestly, we have plans that are very affordable.  Parents can sign up for as little as $31 a month."

The program allows parents to lock-in to today's tuition rates.  The enrollment period is from now until the end of December.
