STONE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Not even a week old, the Pregnancy Resource Center is looking to expand its reach into the community. The center is working to establish a network of community partners so those who are pregnant will have an extended network of support.
"We really wanted to strengthen the community," Executive Director Terri Jennings said. "The community response has been absolutely awesome."
Jennings would like to start working with the local women's job corp program. That way, women who come to her center needing job skills will have a resource. And those already in the program, who might become pregnant, will know they have a partner in the resource center.
"We definitely want to give them all the resources that they need," Jennings said.
To address the growing problem of teen pregnancy, Jennings works with the Solid Rock Youth Ministry in Wiggins. She talks with young people about the challenges they'll face if they become pregnant or get someone pregnant. But, she also lets them know the center is there should they need it.
"We wanted something in our own community where they feel safe and comfortable to come to," Jennings said.
But the focus isn't just on women. The center is working to enrich the lives of men through mentoring, especially those with babies on the way.
"As far as the men's ministry, we do have some volunteers that are going to come in and do classes with the men," Jennings said.
The center could definitely use more volunteers, but the community has already stepped up to help out.
"What I'd really like to do is peer counseling. It's gonna be great knowing I can make a difference," volunteer Daphne Guthrie said.
The center is located at 313 East Bond Avenue in Wiggins. It's open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10a.m. to 5p.m. and Thursdays from 10a.m. to 8p.m. You can give them a call at (601) 928-9411.
