Robber hits motel clerk in face with gun

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Jackson County authorities are searching for a man the sheriff calls a "brazen" and "hostile" armed robber.

Sheriff Mike Byrd told WLOX News a man with a gun robbed the Quality Inn on Highway 609, just south off Exit 50. Byrd said the man walked into the lobby of the hotel about 11:30 Friday  morning, got money from the cash register and hit the clerk with his pistol.

Surveillance video given to WLOX by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department shows the man jumping over the hotel counter, yelling "Give me the money," and other phrases laced with obscenities.  The video shows him holding a gun to the clerk's head as he clears the cash register, hitting her head with the gun several times.  It appeared the clerk was cooperating with him.

Byrd told WLOX News, "This guy was very brazen.  He came in there and hit her with a gun.  He was very hostile."

The robber is described as a white man, clean cut, wearing a mask. He was also wearing white tennis shoes, khaki pants, and a long-sleeved shirt.  It's not known whether the man got away on foot or in a vehicle.

Lieutenant Ken McClenic said the Sheriff's Department is tracking down several leads.

"We're looking at a desperate, dangerous individual that would go into a hotel at 11:30 in the morning in broad daylight and assault a clerk that's cooperating fully," McClenic said.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Jackson County Sheriff's Department at 228-769-3063.
