Hertog takes over command of the Second Air Force

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Second Air Force has a new commander. Wednesday morning at Kessler Air Force Base, Major General Mary Kay Hertog assumed command. She has been in the Air Force since 1978 and comes to Keesler from the Pentagon.

The Second Air Force is headquartered at Keesler and is responsible for the basic training of airmen. But General Hertog said there is a lot more they do.

"We are not just training, we are growing leaders across the Air Force," Major General Mary Hertog said. "Leaders that have proven themselves in combat and at home station. All you have to do is look at what the professionals at Second Air Force have done to support joint expeditionary taskings and coalition Air Force's technical training. It all starts here. The Wings, the Groups, the Field training units of the Second Air Force help determine the future of our great Air Force."

Hertog replaces Major General Alfred Flowers, who is headed for a new assignment at the Air Force Budget Office in Washington.
