Bay women restore historic home, open business

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - Pam Collins and Joy Panks are business partners at Twin Light Creations in Bay St. Louis. The shop specializes in garden and home decor.

The two women opened the doors to their business in 2007 after completing the ambitious restoration of a historic cottage destroyed by Katrina.

"People said, Why would you do this? We told them, You see today, we see tomorrow," Panks said.

The Creole cottage at 136 Main Street was originally built in 1893. In 2005, Katrina's storm surge all but wiped the structure off the face of the earth. Panks and Collins purchased the home and brought it back to life with the goal of keeping the home's historical value.

"We tried to preserve as much as we could," Collins said.

Of interest, one side of the structure is Twin Light Creations, the other half is a residence.

Pam and Joy survived the ups and downs of tackling a challenging restoration project and Collins believes it was worth the effort.

"It feels good in your heart to look back and say, 'We really did it.'"
