Across our nation this year we have seen the unemployment rate take a huge jump. In fact the latest figures show 9.7 percent of Americans were out of work in August. In Mississippi our state wide unemployment rate is even worse with 10.5 percent of Mississippians looking for work. On the coast our unemployment rate is lower than the National or Mississippi rate.
Still thousands of workers in south Mississippi have been laid off and are looking for work. This next week WLOX, along with a number of local businesses and industries are attempting help more people find employment. We will be hosting a job fair Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott in Gulfport.
There will be representatives from banks, casinos, schools, hospitals and shipbuilding just to name a few of the businesses and industries represented. This is a chance for you to meet with a number of these employers and find out what job skills are needed to land a job in these occupations. Our hope is that some local residents will walk away from Tuesday's job fair at the Courtyard Marriott in Gulfport with a job.
