PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - A new medical clinic is open in Jackson County to help keep workers on the job. MedWorks is a part of Singing River Health Systems. This clinic will cater to working people, everyone from welders to waitresses.

Thursday was opening day at MedWorks Clinic in Pascagoula. Doctors and nurses are focused on employees injured on the job.

"We say industrial workers, but it's really anybody," Clinic Director Andrea Pater said. "It is restaurants that have cooks that get burned. It's the shipbuilders, pipe fitters, welders. It is the custodians at the school system."

Dr. John Pessoney is the primary care physician at the clinic. He said the county has needed this kind of service, something between an ER and a family doctor. He found that many industrial workers were traveling out-of-state or to crowded emergency rooms for treatment.

"It is not good for the emergency rooms, because it is not really emergency cases," Dr. Pessoney said.

The medial staff said the clinic is comfortable, convenient, but not costly.

"We are faster we hope," Pater said.

The clinic will also offer employers a new option for drug and other tests often required for workers.

"We have the ability to do audio hearing tests; we have two hearing booths," Dr. Pessoney said. "We can get it all done in one spot. It's a one stop shop kind of thing."

Staff members said their goal is to treat workers so they will spend more time on the job and rather than in the hospital.
