LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - University of Southern Mississippi History Professor Dr. Pat Smith is on a literary mission.

"I want to tell the Mississippi story," Dr. Pat Smith said about his new book. "It's titled Mississippi Tsunami."

Smith has conducted interviews in conjunction with USM's Oral History Project at the Katrina Research Center on the Gulf Coast campus.

"The interviews with people will be very important as time goes by," Smith said.

The national media concentrated on New Orleans when covering Katrina, and Smith wants to make sure the Mississippi story is not lost in the shuffle. He plans to concentrate on the people and communities impacted by the worst natural disaster in American history.

Dr. Smith expects to complete his book and have it published in early 2010.
