BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Officials are investigating the cause of a fire at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center. It happened around four o'clock Sunday afternoon in the new section of the convention center.

The fire broke out in an unused section of the building, near the roof hatch.

A gun show was taking place on the lower level of the convention center, however, Biloxi police and fire officials evacuated the building and no one was hurt.

"There was a fire around the roof hatch," said battalion chief Joe Boney. "It took them a minute to cool it down enough to where they could get the hatch open. They had to cut part of the roof open and extinguish the rest of the fire."

The coliseum just recently opened the new addition to the the convention center after a $63 million expansion.

Coliseum Director Bill Holmes said repairs to the new section were being made on Friday. Torches and tar were being used to help with those repairs because of those instruments and materials, the area had been smoldering since Friday. At some point Sunday afternoon, air crept in to the section and ignited the blaze.
