One dead after Saturday boating accident

By: WLOX Staff

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - A Saturday afternoon boat outing has claimed the life of 24-year-old Christopher Webb and leaves his 16-year-old brother, Shane, in critical condition.

Around 4:16 pm Saturday, a call came in about two boats colliding in D'Iberville.

Divers pulled the body of Christopher Webb from the Tchoutacabuffa River at the end of River View Drive just after 5:00 pm.

D'Iberville Police, along with other agencies, are still working the accident to determine exactly what happened.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove told WLOX the initial investigation shows Fishing and Wildlife officers tried to pull 26-year-old Conley Bernius over for reckless boat operation. Initially, he stopped for officers, but during the stop, he suddenly sped away.

Bernius' boat crashed into the bass boat containing the brothers and a 4-year-old boy.

The 4-year-old boy is in stable condition and is expected to be released to his family Saturday night.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday to determine Christopher's exact cause of death.

Shane was taken to Biloxi Regional Hospital, then transferred to USA Medical Center in Mobile where he is in critical condition.

Bernius was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The passenger in his boat was not injured. Bernius has not been charged at this time.
