GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Gulfport City Council on Tuesday approved phase one of a three phase project to upgrade Jones Park.
"This is a very big deal, a very big step for the City of Gulfport," City Spokesman Ryan LaFontaine said.
Phase one will begin in about two weeks. It will include a children's splash pad, a playground and green space. Grant money the city has received will cover the $1 million price tag.
It has certainly taken some time to get started on the project, but LaFontaine said there's a good reason for that.
"We wanted to make sure we got it right, and did not do it piecemeal."
Phase two of the work on Jones Park will include an ampitheater. There is no timetable for phases two and three, but LaFontaine insists it will happen.
"The idea is go to from east to west, phase one being on the eastern side of the park. I doubt we would leave the east looking really nice and the western side looking empty," LaFontaine said.
