MISSISSIPPI SOUND (WLOX) - A Moss Point woman has drowned. Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus says 37-year-old, Michelle Passante of Lily Orchard Road was on a boat that capsized Wednesday afternoon about 40 miles south of Pasacgoula.

The 21-foot boat capsized about 27 miles south of Petit Bois Island. The Coast Guard rescued six of seven people that were in the boat.

Passante's body was found in the pilot house of the vessel and turned over to local authorities. Four of the survivors were picked up by the Fighting Chicken, a charter boat. Two others were found on a nearby oil rig by the crew of a rescue helicopter and taken to Gulfport Regional Airport.

The Coast Guard in Mobile received a call about a capsized boat about 3:30pm on Wednesday from the captain of the off shore supply vessel Fighting Chicken. Sector Mobile immediately launched the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Coho and a rescue plane and crew from Aviation Training Center in Mobile. A rescue helicopter and crew from Air Station New Orleans also responded to assist in the search and rescue.

The rescue helicopter and crew returned to the scene to continue the search for the missing person. A Sea Tow vessel with assistance from the Coho, helped right the capsized vessel. That's when Passante's body was found in the pilot house.

The condition of those rescued is unknown, and the incident is under investigation.
