Biloxi VA receives funding for expansion

By WLOX Staff

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The federal government on Wednesday awarded contracts for construction of new health care facilities in Biloxi. The $153.7 million in contracts cover about half the cost of expanding services and building new facilities at the VA in Biloxi.

Secretary Eric Shinseki said rebuilding VA resources on the coast is a top priority. Katrina damaged the VA on Back Bay Biloxi and destroyed the campus on the beach in Gulfport. Demolition is already underway in Biloxi.

Projects on tap include an addition to the medical center, a rehab center for the blind, extended care facilities, and a parking garage. A new mental health facility is also planned to replace the services that had been located in Gulfport.

VA officials say the expansion will utilize sustainable design elements and preserve the historic beauty of the Biloxi property.
