LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - Next year's Pride of Long Beach Festival may be held downtown. Mayor Billy Skellie says after nearly two years of planning, work is scheduled to start on a new town green in about two weeks.

Plans are to build an outdoor stage, rest rooms, a splash pad, pavilions and shoe flies on Jeff Davis Avenue. The mayor says the town green will be a vital part in the revitalizing of downtown.

"It's terribly important,"said Mayor Billy Skellie. "You need people to feel good about community and to stay connected. This is part of what keeps people connected where they can go have a nice day, a fun day. It's just a good thing."

The town green will be built on property that was Harper McCaughan Elementary school before it was destroyed by Katrina. Superintendent Carrolyn Hamilton says the school district is leasing the property to the city.
