Last minute preps for first day of school

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - The school supply aisles at Wal-mart in D'Iberville were packed with parents and children, even on the eve of the first day of school.

"We'll see where they got the sales at," said Lori Babb of Woolmarket.

Certain items were out of stock. That was bad news for those who waited so late.

"Any color. Doesn't matter," said one young lady who was searching for binders.

When asked why they waited until the last minute, Maegan and Jessica Fowler said, "We're definitely procrastinators."

"I guess it's the American way, wait until the last minute for everything," said Randall Platt of Vancleave.

And when asked if they are ready for school, Maegan said, "Oh yeah!"

However, Jessica said, "No, I don't want to go back."

Ready or not, school goes back in session Wednesday for several districts in south Mississippi, including Gulfport.  Open houses gave students a chance to meet their new teachers and get used to unfamiliar surroundings.

"I just think it's special for them to see their cubbies with their names on it or to see their name hanging from the ceiling, to know I already feel comfortable here and not be afraid," said Kindergarten teacher JoAnn Blount.

"I want to sit by her," said five-year-old Jonathan McCormick, as he pointed to his twin sister Kate.

The siblings are starting Kindergarten at Bayou View Elementary this year.

When asked how she felt, Kate said, "Very, very happy, because I'm going to school.  I get to play and have fun."

Kate's mom, Sugar McCormick, was a bit emotional.

"Doing good. I've only cried once. I'm going to try not to cry tomorrow morning," she said.

Expect a lot of anxious parents and excited children, when the school bell rings Wednesday morning.

There are a lot of changes taking place in our schools this year. Some districts are opening brand, new schools, while others have realigned schools or changed attendance zones.

Schools open Wednesday for these school districts:  Jackson County, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi.

These school districts start on Thursday:  Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, Pass Christian, Harrison County, Hancock County, Bay-Waveland.
