Gulfport soldier dies from combat wounds

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gulfport soldier died last week while serving in Afghanistan.

A Pentagon statement issued Monday said Staff Sgt. Johnny R. Polk, 39, died July 25 at a U.S. military hospital in Germany of wounds suffered in the July 23 attack. Polk's vehicle was struck by an anti-tank grenade in Kirkuk, Iraq.

Polk was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood.
