Tax-free holiday

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The tax-free holiday has shoppers from as far as Taiwan eager to spend. Through midnight Saturday, shoppers will not have to pay sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100.00.

Some stores are giving shoppers even sweeter deals on top of the sales tax savings.  Prime Outlet has stores offering as much 50% off on top of the sales tax savings.

"To save seven percent sales tax on top a lot of great deals retailers have right now is really incredible," says Keith Pavolini, Nike Factory Store.

The deals could be just the economic boost Mississippi needs as people do their back-to-school shopping.

"We always go to Mobile for school clothes, supplies and everything.  But since, they had this tax-free holiday here this year, we're shopping at home," says Karen Fayard, shopper.

"It's been a tremendous response so far," says Pavolini.

Since the tax only applies to clothing and footwear, back-to-school items like backpacks and accessories didn't make the cut. However, customers say there are still plenty of deals, and as they cash in, more money is finding its way into the state's economy.
