Tomorrow and Saturday Mississippi Residents have a chance to purchase some school clothing without having to pay the state's seven percent sales tax. It's called the 2009 Mississippi Sales Tax Holiday. And it applies to most clothing that costs 100 dollars or less.
It appears to be a win-win situation. It gives all of us a tax break, leaving a few more dollars in our pockets and at the same time promising to boost business for local merchants during the tax free holiday.
This is the first time Mississippi has had a statewide tax holiday. It's a chance for all of us to shop at home and keep retail dollars in our community. While the current list of tax free items is long, it doesn't allow a few items you think might be included. For example, backpacks and other school supplies aren't on the list. You will have to pay the regular tax on them. A tax break on notebooks, pencils and other school supplies would really help a lot of parents.
This is really a test run on the tax free holiday. If it proves to be successfu,l then you will probably see it back again next year with hopefully a few tweaks that will allow you to keep even more money in your wallet.
That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to firstname.lastname@example.org, or post your comments below.
