South Mississippi consumers cautious about spending

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A new national Gallup poll reveals that 32% of American consumers are keeping a watchful eye on their spending in light of the current economic climate. The poll finds that one third of those asked said spending less will be their "new normal" habit in the long run.

We went out to Edgewater Mall to find out if shoppers in South Mississippi mirror the polls findings. One man told us "We're still Spending money". A woman we talked to was a bit more careful "I look for big sales" she said.

The Malls Marketing Director, Michelle Rogers has noticed a more cautious attitude "We've heard nothing but doom and gloom so people are cautious" said Rogers. The key for retailers is to be more aggressive when it comes to encouraging people to spend. "They have to offer deeper discounts then they have in the past" said Rogers.

The Edgewater Mall and all businesses around South Mississippi are looking forward to the upcoming sales tax free weekend scheduled for Friday July first and Saturday August first.
