JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Nearly $150 million will fuel construction of new roads and bridges in Jackson County.  Southern District Transportation Commissioner Wayne Brown met with leaders and citizens Wednesday to update them on several projects aimed at easing traffic congestion across the county.

Making travel smoother is MDOT's master plan for Jackson County. Wednesday morning, Commissioner Wayne Brown presented the new designs to help make that happen.

"There are six major projects," Brown said.

In Pascagoula, there is a new Mississippi 611 flyover plan in the works.  An overpass will be built near Chevron in the industrial district.

"That will provide an overpass over U.S. 90 and over the railroad. Think of the thousands of loaded fuel trucks, loaded with gasoline and diesel that come out and cross that railroad track, that has 22 trains a day. It's a desperately needed project.

In Ocean Springs, there is a redesign plan for the Ocean Springs Road/Highway 90 intersection. The project is near Ocean Springs Hospital.  County Supervisor John McKay said the makeover will remove the awkward and dangerous spot in the road.

"Right now, you have one 45 degree angle high traffic area which causes many accidents. It will have two perpendicular intersections controlled by red lights."

"The hospital intersection in Ocean Springs is one that has the most accidents in this county. It is long overdue for realignment and making it safe," Brown said.

The MDOT project getting a cool reception from some citizens is the new Highway 15 corridor to connect to U.S. Highway 98 in Beaumont, Mississippi. One possible route cuts through Latimer.

"If you create hundreds of cars going past my home to keep me awake at night, I will be a very unhappy camper," one Latimer resident said about the proposed project.

Commissioner Wayne Brown said the project is still in the study phase now. He points out that all the road projects are meant to solve problems not create them.

"A more efficient road takes less fuel than an inefficient road, and it also has to do with safety," Brown said.

Other MDOT projects on tap in Jackson County include the Highway 90 overlay in Gautier, the westbound rest area off Interstate 10, also in Gautier, and the Mississippi Highway 57 bypass in Vancleave.
