Red Cross seeking skilled professionals to respond to emergencies

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -  Red Cross Executive Director Paige Roberts called on each member of the American Society of Safety Engineers to sign up and help respond to emergencies in Jackson and George Counties.

"What we really need are people who are motivated from the heart, not the pocketbook," Roberts said.

Roberts said the Southeast Chapter is in desperate need of experts in various fields to assist with day to day operations. Currently, the number of skilled professionals who are volunteering is extremely low.

"We need people that are used to doing statistical and financial information reporting, people that are used to procurement and distribution systems, and people who have management skills," Roberts said about the volunteer openings.  "It is so many skills sets that we need behind the scenes that make everything run smoothly."

Engineering Society member John Fleming has volunteered for the Red Cross and knows about the chapter's challenges. Fleming said he applauds the organization for seeking out more skilled manpower, because it will benefit the community.

"It not about money, it is time. They don't pay you a thing, but it is about the time you donate back to your community and to your love. That is what our safety organization is about is protecting people, and that's why we are all in safety."

The Southeast Chapter has volunteer positions open in media, logistics, health services, and accounting. For more information about the volunteer program, call (228) 762-2455.
