Our state insurance commissioner, Mike Chaney, spent a good deal of time on the coast during the past few weeks attempting to find solutions for coast residents trying to find affordable home insurance. He also sounded an alarm that we all need to heed. Chaney is concerned that five percent of coast residents have cancelled their flood insurance.
Chaney emphasized if you live in a flood zone or near a body of water you need flood insurance. The cost of flood insurance is affordable right now. Many residents pay just a few hundred dollars a year to insure they have several hundred thousand dollars in coverage for structure and contents.
Remember August and September are the peak hurricane months for our area. So if you don't have flood insurance, now is the time to purchase a policy. There is a month waiting period for policies to go into effect so you need to act now. Once a storm enters the Gulf of Mexico it's too late. Policies are no longer sold. Commissioner Chaney is right, most residents in South Mississippi should take advantage of this federal program. Because if you do flood, it will help you get back on your feet.
