POPLARVILLE, MS (WLOX) - The man arrested Sunday and charged with the murder of a Pearl River County man walked out of a courtroom Monday a free man.
Virgil Matthews, Jr., 30, of Poplarville was arrested Sunday after a shooting outside a home on Dakota Creek Road in Poplarville.
Randy Prince, 27, died of a gunshot wound to the chest. Authorities say the shooting happened after an argument between the two men.
At Matthews' initial court appearance Monday morning, Pearl River County Justice Court Judge Nell Cowart ruled there wasn't sufficient evidence to charge Matthews with any crime. The move surprised law enforcement officials, as well as Prince's family.
Donnie Saucier, the chief investigator for the Pearl River County Sheriff's Department, told WLOX News, "We disagree with the judge's ruling. We are still working it as a murder case and will present it to the Grand Jury."
Prince's mother spoke briefly with WLOX News after the court hearing and expressed her disappointment with the judge's decision.
