Unsafe railroad crossings to close

We are glad to hear that a number of unsafe railroad crossings will close in Gulfport. They are unsafe because all there is to warn motorists is a wooden sign. And in some cases you almost have to be on the track before you can really see if a train is coming.

With the city agreeing to close a number of crossings in Gulfport, CSX Railroad will install lights and signals at a number of other crossings in Gulfport. This will improve the safety for motorists who travel daily across the tracks.

In the past year and a half there have been eight car-train accidents documented along the coast with three deaths occurring in those accidents. Most of them occurred at crossings where there are no signals or crossing arms.

We encourage other cities along the coast to take a look at railroad crossings and determine if there are some that they need to close too. Hopefully CSX will continue to work with cities along the coast and make sure that every crossing that remains open will have flashing lights and automated crossing arms. That is the only way to make sure we don't have car-train accidents in the future.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
